Photoshop comprises many features that come together and makes it amazing software. It helps you in transforming an image completely and makes it look shockingly beautiful. In today’s chapter, I would like to discuss two of the chief features of Photoshop that contribute immensely in making it useful for the users. These two elements are the Color Mode and Resolution. Let’s take a look at both the features one at a time and determine color mode in photoshop.
What is Resolution?
In technical terms, resolution is the clarity of an image which is measured in pixels and detailed in bitmap. If the PPI is more, the picture clarity will be more and as the pixels will keep declining, the quality of the picture will fade. The high resolution images are better in view. Resolution has same kind of significance as that of the accurate size of the page. Whenever you are working in PS for web, default pixel rate used is 72 pixels per inch. Most of the monitors display images in this resolution rate only but it can also vary from monitor to monitor.
For commercial uses such as printing photographs, business cards, flyers, brochures, etc or commercial photography, the resolution that is suggested is 300 pixels per inch. This rate is used for the entire above specified tasks and it is to get sharper images.
Color Mode
For a believable outcome, selecting color mode warily is very important. Colors modes that frequently used are RGB and CMYK. Other color mode that enjoys relatively high usage is Grayscale. There is one more feature of “Lab Color” which comes in use to make an image look highly professional and for color correction. Some of the most remarkable corrections can be done with the help of Lab Color mode. These kinds of corrections are difficult to be done in any other mode available in the software. These modes are for professional Photoshop usage and for the professionals that are well aware of Photoshop and its different color modes.
RGB
There are 3 main colors that come together and frame RGB mode. The contributing shades are Red-Green-Blue. This mode is technically used to create web designs or for on screen usage. This mode is most commonly used for monitor displays. Every monitor has different color display characteristics and that is why, different monitors can display different shades of red on the screen.
CMYK
Another alternative is CMYK which is the abbreviation of Cyan-Magenta-Yellow-Black. For the finest prints of an image, this is the color mode that will help you in the best way possible. The amalgams of all these colors create astounding variations of Red, Green, and Blue. The only pitfall that arises with the usage of this mode is the printed images in CMYK don’t appear exactly same as the ones that appear on the monitor display. If you can handle slight adjustments of the printed display and monitor display of colors then CMYK is the mode for you.
So here we conclude the topic of the day. This is some of the general information on resolution and color modes in PS that will be of great use to you. Color mode in photoshop is one of those techniques.
